Summer Fun Nationals:
Fun in the Sun!

The event was initiated by three friends who were USSA Masters and lived at Mt Hood who wanted to share this unique and fun filled mountain with their winter ski racing friends. Those who love ski racing as a life-long passion, want others to be able to share that passion.

In 1989, they hosted the first event, Summer Fun Race, where everyone enjoyed warm, sunny weather combined with ski racing. It proved a lot of fun for many who had considered ski racing a winter sport. It quickly became popular, attracting racers from all across the US and several other countries.

It soon took on the USSA status of Masters Summer Fun Nationals and now consists of Giant Slalom on Saturday and Slalom on Sunday.
The event has grown to its current size averaging 120-150 racers each summer. The racers bring family and friends and make a vacation of their trip to Mt Hood. They usually arrive a week prior to the event for training at a “race camp”. The event gives them the opportunity to be competitive, socialize with friends, and re-educate their muscles half way between last season and next.

The event is supported by about 30-40 volunteers who are both racers and non racers to make the event successful each year.

In addition to the first, second and third place awards for racers in each of their respective five-year age classes and youth classes, the special awards have become a competitive tradition, as well.

Weekend schedule

This action filled race weekend starts off Friday afternoon with a welcome party and racer check-in .
The lifts open on the Palmer Snowfield at 7:00 am, allowing just enough time for the two, 1-mile chairlift rides and inspection before the 8:30 am first run start.

Saturday afternoon festivities continue in the Day Lodge at Timberline with kegs of beer, BBQ, awards, raffles, silent auction, and many many giveaways. The Sunday awards party is over by 2pm, leaving time enough to catch a plane for home from PDX.

Many racers show up early for a few days’ race training at a camp to warm their legs up for the race. Some train for just a day or two of warm up, while others just show up and race.
